- A sub-committee of the Manch submitted reports to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on curbing pollution, greening of Pune and a suggested a method for judging the performance of municipal wards.
- Nagrik Chetna Manch has taken up a number of issues for greening of Pune with the Pune Municipal Corporation. The PMC convened a meeting of officials concerned and members of
Nagrik Chetna Manch to discuss the issues. The PMC accepted a majority of the points raised by the
Manch.
- A member represents Nagrik Chetna Manch on the Advisory Committee of the Corporation for preparation of the Traffic & Transportation Plan for Pune.
- The Manch is continuously pressuring the Standing Committee of the PMC not to delay decisions beyond 15 days on contract proposals in terms of Section 73 of BPMC Act, 1949 as amended. This has had a beneficial effect and the Standing Committee largely does not delay the proposals.
- Nagrik Chetna Manch has actively taken up with the PMC the question of encroachments on footpaths/pavements. The
Manch has brought to the notice of the Municipal Commissioner the existence of a circular issued by the PMC in February 2001, which indirectly grants extra FSI to the builders and allows encroachments on footpaths/pavements. The PMC has agreed to cancel the circular. This would be a major achievement, if the PMC actually cancels the circular.
- Nagrik Chetna Manch acts as a pressure group by continuously invoking the Maharashtra Right to Information Act, 2002 to get information. E.g. on expenses connected with official cars, official telephones, holiday tours undertaken under the guise of study tours, progress on the action plan to reduce air pollution in Pune as per the directive of the Supreme Court, illegal building permissions etc.
- Nagrik Chetna Manch conducted a seminar on Earthquake Relief & Rescue Plan on Mar. 04, 01.
- Nagrik Chetna Manch conducted a workshop in September 2001 for the engineers of PMC on construction and repairs of roads including the norms for speed breakers etc.
- PMC grossly violated the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act, 1949. Nagrik Chetna Manch has accordingly filed a writ petition (PIL) in the Mumbai High Court Number 8918/2004 concerning illegal appointments, unlawful award of contracts and allotment of municipal land without calling for tenders. The High Court has refused to entertain our petition because a Supreme Court judgement debars PIL for service matters. We have, however, to file a review petition regarding other matters (contracts and land allotment) because the High Court has not ruled on these matters.
- Nagrik Chetna Manch has used the Maharashtra Right to Information Act, 2002 in a big way to get information so that there is transparency in administration in the Pune Municipal Corporation.
- Nagrik Chetna Manch has issued its Newsletter No. 1 on 25 April 2005 giving updated progress on all points taken up by the
Manch.
